Start with your patient journey, not a feature list
Write down what happens from the moment a patient walks in to the moment they leave: registration, the OPD token, vitals, the doctor's consultation, lab tests, medicines, admission, bed changes, nursing, the running bill, discharge and payment. The best hospital management software for you is the one where each of those steps is done once and seen by everyone who needs it.
Ask every vendor to walk one real patient through the whole journey in the demo. Gaps show up quickly when a patient has to be typed in a second time at the lab or the pharmacy.
The features that matter in India
- UHID and fast registration, with walk-in tokens and appointments.
- IPD with a live bed map, transfers and ward-wise bed charges.
- A running IPD bill with advances, GST and dues visible before discharge, not calculated at the counter.
- Nursing and doctor records: vitals, medication charts (MAR), notes and orders.
- Lab and pharmacy on the same patient record, so orders arrive without paper slips.
- ABDM and ABHA: ABHA creation and verification, Scan & Share check-in and consent-based record sharing.
- Ayushman Bharat (PMJAY) paperwork, if you are an empanelled hospital.
- Printed documents that look right: prescriptions, bills, lab reports and discharge summaries.
Check ABDM integration properly
Many products say they support ABHA. Ask whether the software has cleared the National Health Authority's ABDM functional-testing milestones (M1 for ABHA, M2 for sharing records as a provider, M3 for receiving records with consent). Then ask to see an ABHA being created and a record reaching the patient's PHR app during the demo.
Ekansh has cleared M1, M2 and M3. These are integration milestones, not a government endorsement.
Mobile matters more than it looks
Nurses and duty doctors are rarely at a desk. If charting means walking to a computer, it gets done at the end of the shift from memory. Look for an Android app where nurses record vitals and medicines at the bedside and doctors see them at once.
Pricing: what to compare
Prices vary with modules, beds and users. Compare the yearly cost for your actual setup, including the lab and pharmacy modules if you need them, staff accounts, onboarding and training, data migration from your current system, and what happens to your data if you leave.
A modular product lets a small nursing home start with reception, OPD and billing and add clinical modules later without moving to a new system.
Questions to ask in every demo
- Can you show one patient from registration to discharge without re-typing anything?
- What does the final IPD bill look like, and how are advances and dues handled?
- Which ABDM milestones have you cleared?
- Can nurses chart from a phone?
- Who sets up our wards, rates, test catalog and letterhead, and how long does it take?
- Where is our data stored, who can see it and how is access controlled by role?
- How do we get support, and in which languages?
